Search Engine Optimisation

Search engine optimisation is an internet marketing strategy that considers what people search for and how search engines perform.

SEO involves making your business website appear higher in the rankings for the search terms that are relevant to your business, your products or your services, by creating content that makes search engines more aware of what your business message is attempting to say.

By producing web pages that contain keywords and phrases that highlight your business products or services, you enable a search engine to insert your business website into the correct category and increase your page ranking (How high on a search result page your business website appears).
Studies have shown that the higher the ranking place you achieve the greater volume of searcher visits to your website.

Search engines, not only, look for relevant keywords appearing within the web copy on your business website, but, look for content that is regularly updated and is different to other similar websites (sorry copy and pasting others work, for your business website, is definitely not good SEO). This has the benefit of letting search engines, such as Google, Ask.com and Yahoo, etc, know that your website is active, current and, of course, relevant.

Good, effective SEO is not, entirely, focussed on becoming search engine friendly because being search engine friendly is a means to an end and not the desired end result.

Perhaps, looking at SEO from a more traditional viewpoint would make it much easier to understand what the process is designed to achieve:
You, the business owner, supply a product (some things never change)
You, the business owner, set out your stall displaying your wares (in modern times, this would be your website)

You must advertise your wares and in olden times, this would mean acquiring the services of a signwriter. You would have to notify the signwriter what your business, sold, did, made etc, in order for him/her to produce the correct sign. This is, in basic terms, modern day SEO.

Next, you would hang your sign and this forms your advertising, then a person sees your sign, wants what is shown, so views your stall and this is where another piece of SEO comes into being because you have done everything possible to attract your visitor, now you must close the deal with the quality of your product and your level of knowledge of your products (once, again, this is your search engine optimised web copy content).
